In a landmark move to bolster agricultural development and food security in Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde, on behalf of the Oyo State Government, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Semmaris, France, a global leader in wholesale agri-food markets.
The signing ceremony took place in Paris on April 8, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Oyo State’s journey toward becoming a modern agribusiness hub in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The agreement, formalized with Semmaris, the operator of the world-renowned Rungis International Market, the largest wholesale fresh food market globally, aims to establish a cutting-edge agri-food market in Oyo State.
This partnership leverages Semmaris’ decades of expertise in managing sophisticated food supply chains to enhance Oyo State’s agricultural infrastructure, improve market access for farmers, and ensure the efficient distribution of fresh produce across the region.
This agreement is a game-changer for Oyo State. By partnering with Semmaris, Governor Makinde’s administration is taking a bold step toward further modernizing the state agricultural sector, creating jobs, and ensuring food security for the people and residents of the State.
The modern agri-food market, expected to be located in Ibadan, will serve as a central hub for farmers, traders, and agribusiness stakeholders. It aims to streamline the supply chain, reduce post-harvest losses, and provide a hygienic, organized environment for the trade of agricultural goods.
The initiative builds on the Makinde administration’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the state’s economy through agribusiness, including the development of the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub and other rural infrastructure projects.
