The lawmaker representing Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Abass Adigun Agboworin, has called for greater commitment to the ideals of democracy, stressing that democratic governance must continue to deliver hope, development, and opportunities to the people.
Agboworin made the call in a statement by his Media Group, on Friday, to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, describing June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by heroes who fought for the enthronement of democratic governance in the country.
The federal lawmaker noted that Democracy Day provides an opportunity for leaders and citizens alike to reflect on the progress made so far and renew their commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.
According to him, democracy goes beyond the conduct of elections and should be measured by the extent to which it improves the lives of the people through responsive governance, economic empowerment, quality education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and social justice.
Agboworin said the essence of democracy lies in its ability to create opportunities for citizens to thrive and participate meaningfully in the affairs of their communities and the nation at large.
He emphasized that elected representatives at all levels must remain accountable to the people and continue to pursue policies and programmes that address the needs and aspirations of the populace.
The lawmaker further reaffirmed his commitment to effective representation and people-oriented initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of residents of Ibadan North-East and Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency.
While paying tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, Agboworin urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in supporting democratic institutions and promoting peaceful coexistence, unity, and national development.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day this year, we must remember that the true test of democracy is its ability to positively impact the lives of the people.
“We must continue to work together to strengthen our democratic institutions, promote accountability, and ensure that governance delivers hope, development, and opportunities for all Nigerians,” he said.
He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, urging citizens not to lose faith in the nation’s democratic system but to continue contributing their quota towards the attainment of a more stable, prosperous, and equitable society.
